found in the Philippines

How "fish-safe" is judged here

All ten plants below are non-toxic freshwater aquatics with no documented reports of poisoning or harming aquarium fish or shrimp — they're regularly sold and kept in Philippine aquarium shops (e.g. Cartimar) and aquascaping farms. A few (Hydrilla, Water Hyacinth) grow aggressively in open waterways and are considered invasive weeds outside the tank — safe for fish, but keep contained in a home aquarium or pond.

The Plant List

10 species · native & naturalized
01

Palawan Sword

Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia

Native · Palawan

Long ribbon-like leaves that sway in current; one of the largest Cryptocoryne species and a Philippine aquarium-trade export.

Non-toxic, safe with all community fish & shrimp
02

Philippine Crypt

Cryptocoryne usteriana

Native · Philippines

A hardy, broad-leafed crypt endemic to Philippine streams; tolerant of varied water hardness once established.

Non-toxic; leaves are not palatable so fish leave it alone
03

Java Fern ("Philippine" var.)

Microsorum pteropus

Found · SE Asia incl. PH

Attaches to driftwood and rock instead of substrate; tough leathery leaves that most fish won't graze on.

Completely fish- & shrimp-safe, even with fin-nippers
04

Java Moss

Taxiphyllum sp.

Found · SE Asia incl. PH

A tangled carpet or wall of moss; a favorite spawning and hiding spot for fry, shrimp, and betta.

Non-toxic, actively protective for fry & shrimp
05

Anubias

Anubias barteri var. nana

Cultivated · widely in PH

Thick, dark-green leaves on a rhizome; grows on wood or rock and thrives in low light, even outcompeting algae.

Non-toxic; bitter sap deters grazing, so it's rarely eaten
06

Water Wisteria

Hygrophila difformis

Cultivated · PH aquarium trade

Fast-growing, lacy stem plant; excellent nitrate uptake makes it a natural water-quality booster.

Non-toxic and edible-safe if nibbled by herbivorous fish
07

Rotala

Rotala rotundifolia

Cultivated · PH aquascape farms

Slender stems that flush red under strong light, popular as a colorful background plant in local aquascapes.

Non-toxic; safe even in heavily-planted community tanks
08

Water Thyme

Hydrilla verticillata

Naturalized · PH waterwaysContain in tank

Whorled, fast-growing oxygenator found in rivers and irrigation canals across the country.

Fish-safe; grows aggressively so trim regularly
09

Dwarf Hairgrass

Eleocharis acicularis

Sold · PH pet & aquarium stores

Fine, grass-like carpeting plant used as a foreground lawn; a Cartimar aquarium-market staple.

Non-toxic; ideal for bottom-dwelling fish & shrimp
10

Water Hyacinth

Eichhornia crassipes

Naturalized · PH ponds & riversContain in tank

Floating rosette with inflated stalks and lavender flowers; trailing roots give fry a natural shelter.

Fish-safe; classified as an invasive weed in open water

"Fish-safe" reflects the consistent absence of toxicity reports across aquarium-keeping literature and the common horticultural/aquarium trade use of each species. This is a hobbyist reference, not a substitute for species-specific veterinary or ecological guidance — always research any plant before adding it to a tank with sensitive or specialty fish.

Here is an infographic highlighting three popular aquatic plants found in the Philippines, along with notes on their suitability for fish tanks.

  • Anubias Barteri (Anubias): Known for its large, hardy leaves, it provides excellent shelter for fish but is best attached to rocks or wood rather than buried completely in the substrate.

  • Cryptocoryne Wendtii (Crypts): These plants thrive in varying light conditions and create a dense, lush environment that many fish enjoy exploring.

  • Vallisneria Gigantea (Giant Vallisneria): Ideal for background placement, this fast-growing "grass" helps maintain water quality and offers protection for larger species.

As noted, all three are considered non-toxic and generally safe for most common aquarium fish

The local distinction matters: some plants are merely sold widely in Philippine aquarium shops, while a few are genuinely native. I’ll label those separately so the infographic doesn’t encourage collecting threatened wild plants.
