Cebu City (17 October) -- For instituting child-friendly programs and policies, Cebu City and the Municipality of Pilar in Camotes Island, Cebu have been awarded this year under different categories for the 2008 Presidential Search for Child-Friendly Cities and Municipalities in Central Visayas.
Both local government units (LGUs) will be awarded in a formal ceremony sometime next month, according to Emma Patalinjug of the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7).
Cebu City won under the highly urbanized category while Pilar town bested other municipalities under the 4th-6th class municipality.
It is the second consecutive time Cebu City won the search, the first was in 2006 while Pilar has won for three straight times already, this is learned.
The nationwide search is spearheaded by the DSWD aimed at encouraging LGUs to incorporate programs and project designed for the welfare of children in their respective areas.
Patalinjug said among the criteria that determines the winner are the health programs designed for children six years old and below including complete immunization for infants and children aged 0-6 years as health services have already been devolved to the LGUs; budget allocation for children's programs and services; accessibility features for disabled children; and functionality of the Barangay Council for the Protection and Welfare of Children (BCPC).
